Chair Makeover

Ok, so I had posted the living room after photo, and as you’ll see, in the very left corner is the baby seat on top of a fug chair.

I have two of them because they go with my in-laws dining set picnic table, but since I don’t cook, we don’t have a table.  So they sit around.  One lovingly held up my printer in my office, but I finally got a real stand, so it’s just been hanging out in there too.  They are ug-guh-lee.

Damn girl, that’s an ugly chair!

Here it is, taunting me:

Stupid Chair

So I’ve been trying to figure out what to do.  I need to recover it, obviously, but I am SO FREAKING TIRED of looking for fabric.  And I was laying in bed last night feeling so sorry for myself that I had to look for more fabric when it occurred to me that I COULD just use the leftover fabric from the cornice/pelmet box things.  Duh.

So, I did that!

What you need:

A chair

Staple gun (I have lost ours, so I used carpet tacks, which I had on hand.  If you use those, get a hammer too)

Fabric

Directions:

1. Turn over the chair and unscrew the seat.  I was thrilled to see that mine only had four screws and was as idiot proof as possible, which I always hope for, but rarely get.  Make sure and take not to how the cushion is positioned if there is a bottom stamp, because they aren’t square like you’d think (or mine wasn’t).

2. Lay out your fabric on the floor and trim to about 4 inches past the seat.  Some of these pictures were before I trimmed.  Stretch it around and staple.

Make sure it’s straight.

3. Do that for all 4 sides.  You can leave the corners for last, which is what I did.  They needed finessing and I was totally not into it during.

4. Fold the corners the way you want and staple in.  Attach it back to the chair.

You’re done.  It’s really that easy.  Here’s the after:

Yeah I re-caulked too.

Much better!

I’m considering painting the chair red, but haven’t decided yet.  What do you think?

You could do the chair black and the undersides red like a certain shoe company. 🙂

I would paint it black. Since you have black and white photos and it looks like those red flower pictures have black in them too. It would make the seat “pop”. You could always sand the edges to give it a worn look if you go for that. Or even paint some of the edges red, then black so when you sand it some red shows through. Just my 2 cents 🙂 It looks great! I recovered all of my dinning room chairs with an embossed white vinyl so they would wipe easily. I LOVE them!
