Category: House Stuff

Welcome

So I take the last part of the year off, and when I put in my vacation request, I think about all the things I’ll do in that time. I’ll sleep late. I’ll have long lunches with my friends and relaxing coffee dates. I’ll watch Fixer Upper marathons and snuggle up on the couch and drink cappuccino. I’ll lay under a heavy blanket and read until my eyes cross. That sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

Inevitably the only thing I get to do is clean and organize and purge. There is no relaxing. There is only sun up to sun down doing stuff. I have done so much crap that every muscle in my body hurts. I sat down only to write this post. And y’all, I have a super emotional post inside me that’s been wanting to get out for a while now, and I just don’t have it in me to bang it out onto this keyboard.

Office Rug

Hey y’all! I posted this on my Facebook but I figured I’d elaborate.

It took me months to pick out the gray for the walls (Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore), and nearly as long to pick out the rug. Hubbin asked me how many rugs we were going to buy until I screeched “AS MANY AS IT TAKES TO GET THE RIGHT ONE, OK?!” because I am a loving and graceful wife. Grays are so hard to match – I really feel like picking out paint colors shouldn’t be this hard, but it is. Since the gray is such a low toned gray, I didn’t want a dark rug to go with it.

So I finally settled on this one:

I don’t get referral links because no one cares about me, but if you’re interested, it’s the Safavieh Indoor/ Outdoor Amherst Beige/ Light Grey Rug from Overstock. Wayfair carries it as well, but it was cheaper with Overstock (and they refunded me the difference when they knocked it down by $50 two days after I bought it). It shipped relatively quickly and made it without a mark on it (which will likely be short lived, since my kids seem hell bent on destroying everything I ever buy).

The Stairs

So we have tossed around the idea of painting our staircase for about a year now. I cannot tell you how much I hate painting trim, though. Love the look. Hate the work.

Hubbin and I have come to sort of a crossroads with regards to the house. It’s zoned Residential/Commercial and located in between two cities. Do we move? If so, what work does the house need? If we sell it residential, it needs a lot of work. If we sell it commercial, they’ll likely tear it down. And where do we move? Do we move to the better school district that is closer to our friends and our church, but farther away from my job, adding to my already long commute? Do we move closer to my job, but farther from everything else?

So Hubbin and I have been in that dance for a while now, which has paralyzed us. It’s now time, though, to get to it. The house needs work, and we might as well do it in the meantime of deciding what we’re going to do or where we will go.

Shelves!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s an actual post about home improvement!

Don’t faint, y’all. It’s been busy around here. And by busy, I mean I have thoroughly enjoyed laying on the couch doing nothing instead of finishing the things I’m supposed to finish. Like the office/playroom/dining room. So this post is really like more of a sneak peek, and not because I want to keep y’all in suspense, but because I realized after we installed one of the shelves that I lost half the parts. And then I didn’t feel like looking for them, so I gave up and now I’m laying on the couch again.

You know what, whatever, the whole title of this page is The Lackadaisical Mom. If you were looking for someone who rallied the troops, you’re on the wrong page. I am just what you’re looking for, if you want a blog with rare and random posts, most of which have nothing to do with renovation lately.

The Desks Are In…

Sheesh, y’all, I have waited for this day…wow. Long time. As you know, Hubbin’s dad is a woodworking extraordinaire, and I had him custom build desks for the-room-that-just-whatever (it was a dining room, then an office, then a dining room, then a play room, and now it is turning back into an office). So, I asked Hubbin’s dad to custom build identical desks because I can live in total chaos as long as it is symmetrical. THERE MUST BE SYMMETRY IN MY WORLD OR MAMA WILL FALL APART.

Anyway, So at last post, I’d painted the living room a very, very light shade of gray. Today, Hubbin’s dad delivered the desks. And oh…guys. He does such beautiful work. I kind of picture it like this, but without the sad ending and drugs and swearing and all the dead people:

I tend to want to wait to post until it’s all done, but that is really boring and no one else on Earth does that. So, ignore the curtains that aren’t going to stay, the rug that will be replaced, the thing in front of the window that’s going up to my room, and a million other things. And know that there are lots of decorations coming and they are going to be beautiful. But for now, just look at the beautiful work. It is exactly how I pictured it, and Irvin (Hubbin’s father) nails it EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I have lost my mind

…and y’all, there wasn’t much there to begin with.

I worked today, which included inviting a friend to go shopping with me during lunch and then realizing I forgot my entire wallet, so that was nice. And then a major database failure that required restoring from backup and a total bailout from the old boss that I terrorized, poor woman. And then I came home and changed and painted the entire dining room or office or whatever it is right now.

Grumpy Toddler is now fluent in Spanish, thanks to three hours of YouTube, and I’m pretty sure she may have called me a really bad word (ok, not really, but it’s SO within the realm of possibility – Daddy is at Bible Study and we just lose our minds when Daddy is gone), and The Oldest One has been talking for at least four minutes and I have no idea what she just said. I slept two whole hours last night and woke up singing I’m Too Sexy and I THINK IT MAY BE TIME FOR ANOTHER PINTEREST INTERVENTION, Y’ALL.
